Well its been a very busy year for Android apps, with hundreds of thousands being developed this year, but not all of them are worthy of taking up valuable space on your smartphone or tablet.

Best Apps 2013

Google play have announced what it feels are the 17 (strange amount) best apps available on the Play Store in 2013, there are some regulars there like ‘Swift Key’ the very intelligent and highly customisable keyboard app, the only app that is not free on the list, and the BBC News app which is personally one of my favourites and most used apps.

Below is a brief description of some of the winners:

BBC News – A comprehensive and intuitive news app that lets you tailor the news to your interests, if you are interested in vacuous Z-list drivel this app is not for you.

Gumtree – Buy and sell your unwanted stuff in your local area with the Gumtree app, try to avoid selling your christmas presents until at least February.

Argos – No more waiting on a plastic chair for your number to come up for you to claim your purchase, do it on the app from the comfort of your living room, presuming you don’t sit on plastic chairs at home?

Calorie Counter – MyFitnessPal – Eat as much as you want this christmas, then download this award winning weight loss and fitness app in the new year and watch the kilo’s evaporate!

Tube Map London Underground – Try to avoid losing the will to live whilst trapped underground with 12 million people in a metal tube. Download this invaluable app if you are thinking over venturing into the cryptic maze of the London Underground.

The Train Line – You have seen the advert for the cheap train tickets on the TV, now hunt out the 9 cheap tickets actually available for that family trip to Edinburgh with this very useable, informative and well designed app.

ViewRanger– Avoid calling out and ruining the Christmas meal of your local mountain rescue team, by actually planning you adventures with this very useful mapping and GPS app, if you do get lost you can share a picture of yourself shivering halfway up a mountain with all your friends who will be sitting by a warm, open fire in the pub. Duolingo – With this great language learning app you will still be able to navigate back to the settings when your 3 year old changes the language on your iPhone!, Learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, or English on this very popular, fun, educational app.
